The Royal Abu Bakar Museum Johor Bahru is one of the main attractions in town.
The museum occupies the Istana Besar (Grand Palace) which was specifically commissioned in 1864 by the Father of Modern Johor, Sultan Abu Baker. The Grand Palace which was completed in 1864 incorporates some of the Sultan's creative ideas in its architecture.
In the early 1990s, the late ruler, His Majesty Sultan Iskandar, decided that members of the public should be given the opportunity to view the Royal Family's collection in a proper museum setting. His Majesty consented for the palace to be converted into a museum. The museum was officially declared on May 11th 1990.
The museum is home for vast arrays of treasures, work of art, antiquities and furniture belonging to the Royal Family. There is also a picture gallery which features past and present rulers or the Sultanate and their consorts. A large collection of their memorabilia is also featured.
